A legal dispute between Flexport and startup Freightmate AI has surfaced rare detail about how AI operates inside modern freight forwarding. Court filings, reported by The Loadstar in late March, show Freightmate's product handles dozens of documents per shipment, using email scraping, document classification, and cross-data checking to turn unstructured paperwork into clean shipment records.
Flexport's claim goes beyond copied code. The company argues that thousands of shipment-linked documents were downloaded before the employees departed to found Freightmate. In logistics, labeled document datasets tied to real shipments are genuinely hard to replicate. That is where Flexport says the real value was taken.
Freightmate counters that its codebase was independently developed. But the core question the case will force is who owns the training data, not just the software.
